The name of the Catholic church of Pointe-Fortune, constructed in 1904, reminds us of François-Xavier-Tisseur, the first priest.  The white stucco and blue wooden slat covering confirm it’s origin.  The modest church has beautiful pointed windows decorated with panes and is crowned with a small steeple enclosing a wheel-driven bell.  The Québec comedian Olivier Guimond (1914 – 1971), who played in the television program, “Cré-Basile”, broadcast during the 1960s, gave numerous shows to collect money for the church and community activities.  In recognition of his generosity, the inhabitants of the Village had a commemorative monument erected on church property after his death in 1971.

In the front of the Saint-François-Xavier church in Pointe-Fortune, one finds a monument honouring the Québec actor named Olivier Guimond (b. 1914; d. 1971).  Guimond quickly made his mark in the Montreal cabaret but it was not until 1958 that television made him Québec’s number-one comic.  That year producer Noël Gauvin hired him as the star for the popular variety show Music-Hall (Radio-Canada).  From the opening of Télé-Métropole (1961), he played the title role in the TV series “Cré Basile”.  Other TV series followed (Le Zoo du capitaine Bonhomme, La Branche d’Olivier and Smash) and operettas (Les Trois Valses, La Vie parisienne).  His innate comic sense often prompted comparisons to Charlie Chaplin.

The Cottage Hotel was the only one in operation at the start of the 20th century. It was a popular place for welcoming tourists and fishermen. Among the many owners, there was Mr. Hermas Joachim Labrosse and his wife Marianne Ruel in the 1940’s. Everyone liked Mrs. Labrosse and thanks to her the Hotel was renowned for attracting both young and old alike.  Later, Paul Rheault and his second wife Germaine Sauriol became the new owners and ran the hotel for several years until medical reasons forced him to sell. Georges Seguin became owner around 1960. When he suddenly passed away in 1986, his son Michel took charge. Both Michel and his wife Andrée changed the name. Today it’s known as a family restaurant and is called Resto-Bar Zool.
